Two bands, two different languages, one album, one aim. Exploring the darkest shades of doom.

Abdullah formed in 1998 and since then they keep pulling aces out of their sleeves. After the amazing “Snake Lore” EP that was released by Rage Of Achilles in the year of grace 2000, and made lots of doomsters rub their hands with anticipation for more, two full length albums followed, “Abdullah” and “Graveyard Poetry”, released by Meteorcity in 2000 and 2002 respectively. The next release for Abdullah was the self financed “2003 Demos” in which the band went for a death rock –similar to Acid Bath or even Entombed- approach. So now for their latest release this approach comes to terms with their doom metal past, and their new sound lies somewhere in between.

As for Dragonauta things are not so complicated. Dragonauta remain loyal to the 70’s crushing doom they delivered in their previous releases. The amazing “Luciferatu” album and of course the split EP with the mighty Natas.

Abdullah are kicking off with 6 songs all brand new except from “With Guilt” that was part of the “2003 Demo”. “Seven Doors” and “Grey Sky Faith” both have the typical sludgey/punky/epic sound of Abdullah. Jeff Shirilla’s voice being on point all the way through. I can’t avoid saying that Abdullah have one of the best vocalists in the whole doom metal community. “Brightest Day” is surely what we call the pearl inside the oyster. Melody and melancholy equally parted in the most soulful track Abdullah have ever written. When “Killing For Culture” started I thought that something was wrong with my CD player, how the fuck Misfits got in here? Seriously now “Killing For Culture” is the death rock or maybe the more hardcore aspect of the band. Although this side of Abdullah is not the one that I dig mostly, the track is great, energetic and nut breaking. “With Guilt” is the proof that Abdullah are probably one of the last masters of their kind. And what is their kind? The kind of bands that can combine awesome melody with heaviness in a way that is almost unavoidable not to stuck with. Only three words I can think of to characterize “With Guilt”. Psychedelic as fuck.

Dragonauta’s contribution starts with “Ramera Del Diablo”. After the Vampiros Lesbos-like small intro, the attack is massive. Riffs flying here and there, and words spit out of Federico’s mouth with tremendous fierce. “Revolucion Luciferana” could be the perfect soundtrack for hooligans. Anger, fury and low geared guitars. Rob Zombie a few years ago said that Black Sabbath have written every single good riff, thank god he was wrong or maybe excessive. The proof that people are indeed highly influenced by them but still had great ideas is “Letargo Espiritual”. The last tracks of the split are two live performances of “Bruta Vu” and “Tomegapentagram” both included in the “Luciferatu” album. It’s always nice to listen how bands sound on stage, but to be perfectly honest I would prefer in this one, a couple of more new songs from Dragonauta.

Anyway, put this album along the other stoner / doom albums of your collection and live doomed everafter.
