Eternal gratitude goes to G2 records for releasing the
last 5 songs Acrimony ever recorded. The band shows no sign of reuniting,
so these songs can heal our wounds for a while... Until a miracle happens!
Anyway, the first song is "Tumuli", which had been presented
on Rise Above compilation "Rise 13", entitled then "Tumuli
Shroomaroom". "Satellite 19" follows and Dorian amazes
with his dynamic voice, "keep on rollin" says it all. Next is
"In Other Wor(l)ds", a doom hymn, oh that riff... The fourth
track is also pure Acrimony, with beautiful vocal lines, groovy as hell,
maybe their best one here, but when referring to Acrimony, forget about
"best ones"! Their side is concluded with "Timebomb!!!!",
a tribute to the Hawkwind daze, or so it sounds. The production is somewhat
"crunchy" and the voice has never been so clearly heard on previous
Acrimony releases. Well, I'd rather not imagine what would happen to us
all, had Acrimony recorded a couple more songs, epics like "Heavy
Feather" or something, and created a full length.
The Church Of Misery tracks rightfully earned a place here. "Chilly
Grave" is an up-tempo cool song, followed by opus "Cloud Bed",
whose guitar riffs and bassing are magnificent, be sure to check the lead
and riffs over it, how can one not worship this part? This track later
appeared on Red Sun compilation "Stoned Deaf Forever", under
the name "Sick Of Living (Zodiac)", slightly different. Their
side is finished with "Kingdom Scum", an also long song with
naughty doom riffing. A cover of Gun's "Race With The Devil"
is also included, but I think their own ideas is what actually matters
here. Note that these are quite old recordings, back from '96.
If you haven't already got this one, there's still time. It's an important
document on both bands, swansongs of a legendary name in the field of
doom music and early stuff from one of modern doom's finest outfits, if
not the finest. Last and least, the cover simply sucks and the booklet
is poor, we could use some lyrics or info...
