Black Sabbath - "Past Lives"

(divine recordings, 2002)

This is a reissue of the much appreciated first live Sabbath recording, back from 1980, "Live At Last", enriched with an extra CD, which contains rare live versions from the Ozzy era. Needless to say, this is a must-have for all doom and not only listeners.
"Live At Last" may not be "Reunion", as far as sound quality is concerned, but the band is performing so nice. Ozzy sometimes forgets some of the lyrics but what the hell, does it matter to anyone? Eight songs are off the 4 first albums and there's also an early form of "Killing Yourself To Live", which is really interesting. The prolonged jamming on "Wicked World", (which clocks at almost 19min!) is such a greatness. Actually, the whole album is a trip through the originators' live excellence, all songs are now classics of our genre and thus no words can describe whatever one can feel while listening to this...
The bonus disc is a true gift of its own. Okay, the recording quality is obviously worse than on "Live At Last" but we can live with that, I guess. Here you can find "Megalomania" (oh yes!), "Hand Of Doom", "Hole In The Sky" and other forever-diamonds. Cool, huh? The quartet performs just perfect, they're all in good shape, we're anyway talking seventies here! Man, what wouldn't I give to see this band playing live back in the day... (I hate to whine, but where's the divine "Wheels Of Confusion"?)
Some will still accuse this is Sabbath's commercial bullshit, maybe they're right but who cares? Simply get this one and check it for yourselves. "Are you high? Are you high? So am I..." The gods have spoken.
