Cube - "Worse Than Satan"

(self released, 2004)

It’s no secret that the stars are falling from the sky, it’s no secret that TOOL is one of the greatest bands ever to surface the face of this planet, so enormously inspired by the mighty powers of the extra-terrestrial intelligence and the powers of rock’n’roll musicians, that have shaped the form of modern rock sound. That they’re just a category of their own, with an artistic integrity that is just too rare (in all eras of time and space known to man) and yet, for all that, TOOL remains a form of legend.
Why the TOOL craziness you ask? Because everything in this release reminds me of that. From the moment it starts, the sound and the overall production, the riffs and the solos, the songs' length and structure, the vocal lines and the way the words are sung, the mad drumming and the riffs, everything. They grew up in a long, long way from America and they were just kids when "Opiate" or "Undertow" came out but when they got the first glimpse of it, them, and many others got a big slap in the face. It's not very flattering to start a review by praising another band, but even the name points us directly to that direction, the four letters/one syllable category. Surprisingly the first band that I heard so heavily influenced by the aforementioned super-group was also a Greek band, NOOK, which was also a great effort but more of in the form of a one-off side project. In this case we deal with a real full time band with more than great playing abilities and a very interesting demo title to offer. With the five songs that we have handy (4 here and one on the Spinalonga comp.) we can get a real good idea of what they are able to achieve. But they need to find a more persuading way to get through to us and work harder on finding their own identity. In the end it’s just a matter of personal point of view. If you can’t stand the too much similarity comparison, then I guess you won’t be liking this one. Too bad. Because what begun as a whitewash of the past has become a tool to interrogate it (for those of you who don’t get the meaning of the last sentence I point out that its just another chance of using the word tool, and guess what, yes, I'm stoned!). I’ve already heard it many many times and still got not bored of it. And fact is that they have a long way to go before they release something and the word TOOL is not mentioned in the same sentence. BUT remember the NATAS case; they went through a great dissing and rough time before they finally managed to get rid of the KYUSS ghost.
I believe that the potential is there. Guys keep up the good work, see you on stage!
