It seems that Germany starts to make its own way inside the retro movement that started from Sweden. Earth Flight (interesting name, I wonder what their favourite band might be) is a relatively new band and their same titled mini album that was released last year is a quite pleasant surprise. The rules in the Earth Flight game are as simple as the masters of rock music taught: Good riffs make good songs. That’s the case with the 4 little diamonds uncovered in this release, they can be described as doom rock, that borders with metal, with many influences from every brilliant heaviness of the past, first and above all, Pentagram (70s era, remember?), Black Sabbath, some Captain Beyond and even proto-metal bands like Sir Lord Baltimore. There are also some touches from NWOBHM bands like Angelwitch, or maybe even Witchfynde, but these are mostly hidden under the vast 70s vintage mist that surrounds the songs. Their passion is quite obvious, these guys really show how much they love this kind of music, and that is a key point to why they are so good, sincere playing and songwriting always wins, especially when the band has talent. Earth Flight definitely have lots of that, this is shown from their ability to write catchy and easy to remember riffs/melodies and choruses, while still managing to have a depth in their music. An element that makes Earth Flight special is their singer, Tobias. His voice is nowhere near your typical metal voice, and I have a feeling that his singing is more influenced by singers like Michael Stipe (yes the one from R.E.M., I hope the band won’t kill me for that). This is a positive thing, since it adds to the band’s possible potential of being really exceptional, even though I don’t think that this is their purpose. Earth Flight’s current schedule is to record a full length album this year. This is intriguing, since I already want more Earth Flight music. Something tells me that these guys will create something extraordinary very soon. |
