Shattered Nothing - "Shattered Nothing"

(self released, 2001)

I always wanted a Hellenic group, that could combine his 80’s influences (Candlemass, Pentagram) with the classic doom sound of the present decade. The group, which manages that in a satisfactory level, is called Shattered Nothing. Although the production is not the best of all times, the three guys from Volos (province makes miracles sometimes), accomplish to fill their debut demo cd with mournful anthems. It's very positive that vocals have a particular tinge (though it needs attention in the accent) and do not remind another singer. It is also noteworthy, that the vocals are drummer’s work (it is known that singing and drumming isn’t the easiest combination for a band). The guitar sounds very good, rhythm enough in some parts and melodic in some others. The bass guitar is heard faintly in most tracks, but it's positive that it doesn’t follow the riffing (it would sounded as a milange between instruments) but it follows – in parts – the drums.
The only "negative" point, that perhaps doesn’t help in listening the cd, is the unequal following of the songs. Which means: In the beginning, there is an instrumental track, sounding like a marching song (Intro). Very nice! A fast song follows (The 18th Floorshow) and then a slow one (A Melting Wax Visionnaire). Three slow songs follow (Faded Colours, Asking The Greed Monologue, Mankind's Alter Existence) with a duration over six minutes, which would possibly tire the listener. After them is an intro (Intermission), a mid-tempo song (Beside Us Lies The Web) and one more instrumental track (Somnolent). The cd ends with two versions of "Shattered Nothing" and a hidden outro. The result would have been better if there was an intro or an instrumental before these three songs and the mid-tempo track between them in order to share suitably the following of the songs in the cd. It could have also reduced its ups and downs. This small omission doesn’t spoil the final result, but surely the whole thing would sound much better with a different tracking among the songs.
"Intro", "The 18th Floorshow", "A Melting Wax Visionnaire", "Faded Colours", "Asking The Greed Monologue", "Mankind's Alter Existence", "Intermission", "Beside Us Lies The Web", "Somnolent", "Shattered Nothing", "Shattered Nothing (fucked up version)".
