Various Artists - "Locos Gringos Have A Party - The South American Stoner Rock"

(dias de garage, 2004)

I don’t know if the guys behind Dias De Garage label have set a goal to bring every single South American heavy rock band to our ears but between this compilation and the tribute to Kyuss, they’re doing a hell of a job.
Seventeen (17!!!) bands are presented here. Half of them from Argentina, half from Brazil, plus the Chilean stoners Yajaira and Reino Ermitano from Peru, compile an impressive list of Latin-American rockers. With the heritage of many lost gems of their obscure 1970s heavy psych ancestors laying on their shoulders, these bands are here today to show that the eternal flame of rock music knows no boundaries or time limits.

Most of the bands sing in Spanish and that’s an extra cool feature as it adds an exotic vibe to the sound. The music travels from the punk’n’roll - ala Hellacopters - of Flaming Moe to the pure stoner of Yajaira, Vesanico, Billy Goat, Carbura and to heavier doomy stuff of Reino Ermitano (that showcase a female vocalist with a powerful voice) and Sonic Volt. These bands along with Buffalo and of course Los Natas that we already have expressed our love for, are the ones that stand out mostly.
But overall it’s a nice compilation of solid rock songs that you’ll find yourself spinning very often and will hopefully open doors for most of these acts to be further known. Join the party, loco…
