Various Artists - "SR.COMP Vol. 3"

(self-released, 2004)

One way or the other, you probably have heard about stonerrock.com, the biggest online stoner rock community. Besides the numerous fans (and I am one of them), many musicians from the mighty Scott Reeder to the unknown folk, also frequent the forum there. The idea was to compile a collection of songs from the bands of those musicians and share in a CD-tree at first (Vol. 1 only) and on the internet in the MP3 format (Vol. 2 & 3). Like a - do it yourself - attempt to promote these bands and to spread good music in and out of the community. That was the birth of sr.comps...
This is the 3rd addition to the series. It starts with Buffalo from Argentina. I already have reviewed their debut and this song (with the intro) in particular so you can check it out there. It’s a classic stoner tune for the beginning. Then things get rougher, with Kita and Bitter End who move in sludgier territory. My 1st great discovery is the Ditchliquor song. Not so much for the melodic/screaming vocals as for the sweet guitar line. Up next is Galactus 77 with a down-tuned doom track soaked in southern vibe. Expect a review for their new LP soon. An instrumental tune from Half of Zero comes in time to relax from the previous 4 vokilled tunes. Nice mathy tempo changes on this one. My favourite song of the comp is “Billy” by the Hollow Men. It stands out maybe because it’s not so related to the sound we are accustomed. More like a garage tune with Bob Mould on vocals and heavier guitars. I was already familiar with Planet Gemini’s music. If Sabbathic doom rock is your thing, check this band out. Saccharine Death offer a strange slow track about “natural high”. The music reminds me of early Monster Magnet (and that’s a good thing). I can’t say that I dig the vocals (rather talking than singing) but I get a positive vibe overall. Great discovery No 3 would be the Supersonic Death Machine and their - in your face - sludge slab, “Phoenix Rising”. Solar Seven add another typical stoner tune, reminiscent of Sea of Green. The comp closes with a groovy song by the band Indian that features brutal vocals. Strange but I like it.
Overall, a nice introduction to these bands that would appeal to fans for the whole heavy rock/doom metal spectrum. Props to the people behind it. I’ll use their sr.com handles. Above all Balthazar, for organising the whole deal. Mazrim for the cover art. Tagplazen for providing the web space where you all can download the compilation. Of course the bands that contributed their material. And finally El Danno, owner of sr.com, who has created one hell of an online company...
The comp is available in MP3 format (256kbit) at the link below. The cover art is also available there. If you can’t have easy access to the files, get in touch with me and I’ll burn you a copy.
